Does My Child Need Braces? Early Signs Parents Can Look For

One of the most common questions parents ask is: “How do I know if my child might need braces?”

Many orthodontic problems are easier to correct when they’re caught early. Even if your child still has baby teeth, certain signs can tell us a lot about how their smile and bite are developing.

Here are the top things parents can look for at home.

1. Crooked or Crowded Teeth

If the teeth look like they’re competing for space, overlapping, or coming in rotated, this can indicate that the jaw is too small for the permanent teeth. Early guidance can help create space as the adult teeth erupt.

2. Gaps or Spaces Between Teeth

Some spacing is normal while baby teeth are present, but large or irregular gaps may signal that the bite isn’t fitting properly or that teeth aren’t developing in the right positions.

3. Bite Problems (How the Top and Bottom Teeth Fit Together)

Parents often notice overbites, underbites, crossbites, or open bites. These bite issues can affect chewing, speech, wear on teeth, and facial growth—so early detection is key.

4. Early or Late Loss of Baby Teeth

If baby teeth fall out much earlier or much later than expected, it can throw off the timing of permanent tooth eruption. This is one of the most common reasons we monitor kids starting at age 7.

5. Thumb-Sucking or Other Oral Habits

Prolonged thumb-sucking, pacifier use, nail biting, or tongue thrusting can change how teeth and jaws grow. Addressing these habits early can prevent bigger issues later.

6. Difficulty Biting, Chewing, or Speaking

If your child chews on one side, struggles to bite through food, or has noticeable speech issues, bite alignment may be part of the cause.

7. Mouth Breathing

Chronic mouth breathing can influence the growth of the upper jaw and the way teeth erupt. It’s worth assessing early so we can guide development appropriately.

What Should Parents Do Next?

An orthodontic checkup doesn’t mean braces are starting right away. Most kids we see at age 7 don’t need treatment yet—they simply join our growth & guidance program so we can monitor development until the perfect time.

But an early evaluation gives you peace of mind, a clear understanding of your child’s smile, early guidance if needed, and the best chance to avoid more complicated treatment later.
